Plot Summary:  Ida B. ‘n the Lynching Tree is based on the foremost African American female journalist of the 19th century, Miss Ida B. Wells. A founding member of the NAACP, Ida B. Wells was characterized as courageous, fearless, and militant. The play moves swiftly through major events in the life of Miss Ida B. Wells, from her birth on July 16, 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi, to the Memphis lynchings of March 9, 1892, which resulted in her lifelong crusade against lynching and inequities, brought about by Jim Crow laws in the Deep South. 

This historic play is suitable for English, drama, and history classes.  An excellent supplemental reference, Ida B. ‘n the Lynching Tree brings 19th century race relations in the United States to life for students.

C. Nur Wistrand was awarded a “Confronting Racism Grant” (2000) from the Mott Foundation to research and write the script for high school students as a vehicle to reflect and dialogue on historical issues relating to racism.
